On February 13, Prosecutors Against Gun Violence (PAGV) released a letter stating their support for the implementation of “universal background checks” for firearm sales throughout the country.

This is the same regulation that has been instituted in Colorado and Washington state, among others, and which bans private gun sales by requiring all gun sales—legal and private—to be conducted via a background check with the FBI.

According to the letter, released by the New York County District Attorney’s Office, PAGV wants to see “policy makers” implement a number of gun control measures, some of which are new and some of which are expansions on existing gun control.

PAGV’s wish list includes:

  • Universal background checks
  • timely and effective transmission of prohibited persons data to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System
  • combating illegal weapons trafficking by tightening federal and state anti-trafficking laws, limiting multiple gun sales, and supporting inspection and enforcement of licensed gun dealers

PAGV also wants protocols put in place for seizing guns from “domestic abusers.”

PAGV co-chair and co-founder Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said, “As prosecutors committed to public safety, we strongly believe these common-sense policies would curtail gun violence across our nation.”

It should be noted that many of these policies are in place in LA, and the state of California as a whole, yet LA saw an increase in violent crime in 2013 and 2014. Breitbart News reported that although gun control increased during these two years, “aggravated assaults” increased as well.

“Aggravated assaults” are assaults in which a deadly weapon is usually used in the commission of the violent crime.
