Mexican health officials documented 110 new cases of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) in a single day. There are 585 confirmed cases nationwide.

Health officials provided the new information Thursday night during a streamed news conference. Mexico has 585 cases, 2,156 in testing, and eight fatalities.

Undersecretary of Health Hugo Lopez Gatell said Mexican officials were working to find a balance between containing the spread while minimizing socioeconomic damages. The federal government has been criticized by news outlets and politicians for taking an overly relaxed approach.

Lopez Gatell said several times that Mexico is not looking to shut down air, land, or sea ports, claiming such measures are not scientifically justifiable. The official has largely encouraged social distancing. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has also been harshly criticized for repeatedly encouraging the public to mingle.

Despite apparent federal inaction, states and municipalities are taking measures to limit the spread of the virus.
