Mexican health officials confirmed the deaths of two pregnant women from the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) as the number of confirmed cases reaches 3,441 and national estimates push to 28,216.

According to the latest statistics released by Mexico’s Undersecretary of Health Hugo Lopez Gatell, there are 194 fatalities since the pandemic arrived. Just one day before, the fatality count stood at 174.

Health officials are currently testing 10,105 patients. Lopez Gatell said the 3,441 cases should be scaled by 8.2 to reach the current national estimate. The model helps to account for individuals who likely contracted the virus but are not seeking medical attention.

Lopez Gatell stated that the passing of two pregnant women are the first of their kind in Mexico and warned the public to be extra cautious since expecting women are considered one of the most vulnerable cohorts.

In one of the cases, doctors were able to deliver the child via c-section. No details were offered for the second pregnancy.

“The [first case] had a slight breathing difficulty but is now doing well,” Lopez Gatell said. “The mother remained in a delicate condition but passed soon after.”

In both cases, the mothers had one or more additional medication conditions that also worsened their situation including obesity, hypertension, and gestational diabetes, Lopez Gatell said.
