Mexican health officials announced a 10 percent daily rise of confirmed cases of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Medical professionals and some governors continue to claim the federal government is unprepared.

During a nightly news conference, Mexico Undersecretary of Health Hugo Lopez Gatell said the nation has a new total of 10,544 confirmed cases and 970 fatalities. Officials are in the process of testing more than 7,000 more patients.

The number of confirmed cases is only a fraction of what health officials believe is the true scope of the pandemic. According to Lopez Gatell, Mexico is using a projection system called Sentinel, where they multiply the number of confirmed cases by a certain factor to estimate the true number of cases. Last week, health officials estimated of 55,000 cases with a factor of eight.

The spread of the pandemic has led to harsh criticism from state governors who claim the federal government is intentionally undercounting and covering up medical supply shortages. Most recently, the state of Tamaulipas filed legal actions with Mexico’s Supreme Court over lacking federal actions to protect migrants in border cities. Mexico City and Tamaulipas previously agreed to move migrants away from the border areas.
