Dem Sen. Baldwin: Inhumane Trump Administration Is Neglecting Children

Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Live,” Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) criticized the Trump administration for its treatment of migrant children.

Baldwin said, “I think everybody appreciates the fact this is a humanitarian crisis. Relief needs to come very, very rapidly. We have seen the situation at the Southern border go from administrative incompetence to now inhumanity. We can’t act soon enough in my opinion.”

She continued, “I think that the president does not have an understanding of what these families lives are like if they risk everything to get to a place where they hope that they will be safe. Their lives are in danger in their home countries. For the president to say a solution to this is going to be making our alum laws more challenging and differing from the entire community in terms of how we deal with refugees, if he thinks that’s going to solve the problem, I think he’s totally incorrect.

She added, “We have to get this emergency support and then in a department that is managing the situation that doesn’t have a single confirmed leader, but rather acting directors, acting commissioners, et cetera, we’ve got to get a handle on this. I’ve heard commentators talk about how — well, I’ve heard President Trump himself say that this is no different than the previous administration. But he’s absolutely wrong on that. And the law has to be followed and we need to provide basic necessities. I will tell you, if a parent refused their child a toothbrush, toothpaste, made them sleep on the floor, they would be accused of neglect. But this is the U.S. government that is neglecting these children and it can’t be.”
