Billionaire Helps GOP Candidates Contest Races in Democratic Strongholds

Billionaire Charles Munger Jr. is forking out some much-needed cash to an array of California Republican candidates so that the GOP has broader representation in upcoming elections.

The Republican philanthropist is a Stanford physicist and an anti-tax crusader, and has supported initiatives that undermine the power of California public employee unions. “You can’t buy anything,” insisted Munger recently at a lecture at the California Polytechnic State University, as reported by Patrick S. Pemberton of the San Luis Obispo Tribune. “All you can buy is a right to make a case.”

The contributions from the son of billionaire businessman Charles Munger Sr. range from $1,000 to $3,000, and have been used primarily for initial filing fees to encourage candidates to compete in tough races, according to Chris Megerian of the Los Angeles Times. Many of the donations were sent to candidates in heavily Democratic districts just prior to the March 7 filing deadline.
