WASHINGTON, April 8 (UPI) —
Newt Gingrich said he was confident Mitt Romney would run on a staunch conservative platform in the presidential race against President Obama.

Gingrich said on “Fox News Sunday” it appeared inevitable that Romney would be the Republican nominee in the fall; however his platform would have to be one that appealed to conservatives rather than moderates.

Gingrich said the GOP was a “broadly conservative party” and Romney would not have to tailor his message to appeal to non-conservatives. “The primary goal of the entire Republican Party has to be, to defeat Barack Obama,” he said.

Gingrich said he remained troubled by remarks by a top Romney aid comparing Romney’s campaign to an etch-a-sketch that could be reconfigured at will. But, he said, he would gladly support Romney once the nomination is settled.
