Reid Attacks 'Extremist' Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh

Tonight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) took to the podium to lie repeatedly about President Obama’s record. In flowing tones, he explained, “Some said he shouldn’t move heaven and earth to get bin Laden.” Just who said that, aside from Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA)? More importantly, just which president was it who considered prosecuting CIA members who took the measures that led to the intelligence that got bin Laden?

Reid continued, “Some said he couldn’t take on the big banks that brought our economy to its knees. But President Obama made the tough and right call so taxpayers will never again be on the hook for Wall Street’s risky bets.” Well, no. The Dodd-Frank Act actually enshrines bailouts as law.

Reid went on, “Some said he couldn’t take on the insurance companies that were ripping us off. But President Obama made the tough and right call to save lives, save Medicare and ensure no one goes broke just because they get sick.” Except he didn’t, cutting $716 billion from Medicare starting immediately and affecting current seniors.

And Reid ripped the Tea Party: “I’ve had a front-row seat to watch the Tea Party take over the Republican Party. For three and a half years, they wouldn’t govern. They couldn’t lead. And we shouldn’t let them take over the Senate and the White House.” First off, Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate for two of Obama’s three and a half years in office. Second, only the Tea Party has stopped the runaway train of spending, or at least slowed it.

But there’s more Reid: “We must stop the Tea Party before the United States Senate falls into the hands of extremists and ideologues who leave no room for reason or compromise, who don’t recognize common ground even when they’re standing on it.” This is sheer bullcrap. There’s no compromise with people who want to continue spending America into the ground. And the idea that the Tea Party is unreasonable is ridiculous in the extreme. Is their commitment to founding principles really more extreme than a party that thinks that you didn’t build it, and that spreading the wealth around makes everyone better off?

He even went after Rush Limbaugh. “And if they won’t stand up to Rush Limbaugh or Grover Norquist, what would make anyone think they would stand up for you?” Limbaugh and Norquist are warriors for lower taxes for Americans. They are the champions of taxpayers across the United States. So Reid must be speaking to the millions of non-taxpayers who are only interested in bilking the system.

Finally, Reid again implied that Mitt Romney was a tax evader. “Never in modern American history has a presidential candidate tried so hard to hide himself from the people he hopes to serve. When you look at the one tax return he has released, it’s obvious why there’s been only one …. Mitt Romney says we should take his word that he paid his fair share. His word? His word?”

This is class demagoguery at its vilest. Romney has broken no law, and Reid has no evidence to support the idea that he’s evading taxes in any way. But that doesn’t stop him. It never has. Reid is about class warfare and class warfare only. He’s got no other tools in his bag.
