To hear the mainstream media tell it, former President Bill Clinton’s speech last week at the Democratic Convention was a rousing, clarion call for President Barack Obama’s reelection.
But GOP insiders like former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former Clinton strategist and pollster Dick Morris saw something different. Indeed, as they see it, Bill Clinton may prove to be Mitt Romney’s secret weapon come November.
By reminding Democrats and Independents of Clinton’s perceived achievements, Gingrich says Clinton’s speech worked to diminish Obama’s stature:
“I thought parts of the Clintonspeech were eerily anti-Obama, if you just listened to the subtext. Imean, here is Clinton saying, ‘I reformed welfare because I worked withthe Republicans, you didn’t, Mr. Obama.’ He didn’t say it that way, butthink about it,” Gingrich told CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“‘Ihad the longest period of economic growth in history, you didn’t, Mr.Obama. I got to four balanced budgets by working with Republicans, youdidn’t, Mr. Obama,'” Gingrich added.
Similarly, former Clinton strategist and pollster Dick Morris says he “guarantees, based on what he knows” that Clinton wants Obama to lose to Mitt Romney. The reason: Clinton wants to pave the path for a 2016 Hillary run with four years of a Romney record to run against instead of an electorate suffering Obama fatigue from eight years of Democratic rule.
“You will see increasingly over September and October other [Clinton] comments that will come out that will indicate that. He’s determined not to be blamed for Obama’s defeat, so that’s why he’s giving this speech.”
In an earlier interview with Sean Hannity, Morris went further, saying that he has had private conversations with top conservatives who met privately with Clinton wherein the former president told the conservatives assembled: “you have six months to save the country.”
Likewise, Charles Krauthammer previously called Clinton a “double agent” for Mitt Romney after Clinton said Romney has enjoyed a “sterling” business career.
Will Team Clinton quietly assist Team Romney in beating Obama? We’ll know in November.
