Man Charged with Murder of Taxi Driver over Parking Dispute

A 53-year-old taxi driver was fatally wounded by a direct knockout punch to the head in what may have been a fight over a parking spot. The incident took place in a shopping center in the 12800 block of South Prairie Avenue in Hawthorne, CA. on Feb. 10.

Hawthorne police said in a statement that Eddy Nwanyanwu “became involved in a parking dispute with a female subject,” who summoned family member Cedrick Dominick Staten to the scene using her cell phone. Video surveillance shows Cedric Dominic Staten coming up to Eddy Nwanyanwu in a parking lot, “and without provocation, punch the victim in the head area at least once…knocking the victim to the ground.” Police allege that, as a result of the blow, the victim eventually died.

Staten, who was seen fleeing the scene, was apprehended by police and arrested on February 13. Subsequently, he was charged with one count of murder. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Holly Francisco, in an interview, said: “We don’t know if it was a fight over a parking spot or what.”
