Van Zandt County, Texas, Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Sherifi was killed during a shootout while assisting the Canton Police Department in serving a felony warrant Tuesday night.

Van Zandt County Sheriff Kevin Bridger said law enforcement was attempting to apprehend a man who “had outstanding warrants for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer,” KLTV reported.

The man fired on Deputy Sherifi and Canton Police officers from inside a house, leading to a shootout. Sherifi and a Canton police officer were both struck by gunfire.

The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment but Sherifi’s wounds proved fatal.

Sheriff Bridgett said the man they sought to apprehend was found dead inside the residence from a gunshot wound. He did not say whether it was self-inflicted or if one of the rounds fired by law enforcement killed him.

KFDM noted that Sherifi “leaves behind his wife and three children, one of whom was just born in September.”

Malakoff Mayor Nicole Mason-Driver (D) commented on the loss, saying, “I am praying that God surrounds his wife and children with comfort, strength, and love in the difficult days ahead. May they find support in the people around them and peace in the precious memories they will forever hold.”
