Los Angeles County’s Board of Supervisors is expected to vote Tuesday on a “travel ban” for all county employees to the nine states that oppose the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which President Donald Trump has promised to end.
According to the Los Angeles Daily News,
The motion by supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn would ban LA County employees from several departments from vising Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina and West Virginia on county business. The only exception is if there is in an emergency response, according to the motion.

In their motion, they called the Trump Administration’s plan to end DACA “a divisive, ill-advised and inhumane move.”
“This action is widely opposed by leaders of both parties at the federal level, and decried by numerous California elected officials,” Solis and Hahn wrote. “It is also a heartbreaking blow and cruel exercise of Presidential authority aimed at nearly 800,000 of the most vulnerable young people among us, including 214,000 who reside in California.”
More than 100,000 people work for the county. The five-member board oversees the largest local government body in the nation.
Most experts believe such actions are largely symbolic, and that any real fiscal impact is hard to track, but that has not stopped California Democrats from targeting Republican jurisdictions elsewhere..
This is not the first time the Los Angeles supervisors have spent official government time and resources to wage a symbolic protest on a controversial issue over which they have no direct authority. In 2010, L.A. County instituted a largely toothless boycott of Arizona over the controversial SB 1070 immigration law, which came to be known as the “Arizona Law.”
Earlier this year, California’s Democrat-controlled legislature voted to ban travel to Texas, Tennesse and a handful of states over transgender bathrooms and other policies they deemed “discriminatory.”
The local Los Angeles CBS affiliate reports that even the lone Republican on the board, Kathryn Barger — who replaced the outspoken Mike Antonovich — favors the board taking action.
The travel ban is expected to pass.
