Hamas has begun to investigate its own officials in an attempt to establish the security failures that led to the assassination of top militant Mazen Faqha last week, a senior official in the movement told Breitbart Jerusalem.

Faqha was released from Israeli jail in 2011 and sent to Gaza. According to informed security sources, he was plotting terrorist attacks in his native West Bank. He was gunned down outside his home in Gaza City’s Tal Alhawa district; Hamas blamed Israel for the assassination.

Among the Hamas officials questioned were the security officers in charge of the city’s western districts, where the assassination took place, the official said.

Three intelligence officers from the military wing were also questioned, after it emerged that Faqha moved to his new home three months ago at the request of the internal security unit. Some elements in Hamas said that the assassins reached Faqha’s residence surprisingly fast, despite the precautions he supposedly took.

So far, the intensive investigation notwithstanding, Hamas has no leads on who the assassins were, the source said.
