Los Angeles (AFP) – A pair of three-time all stars, PK Subban and Patrick Marleau were traded in separate deals on Saturday that will provide their former teams with extra salary cap space to go after free agents.
The Nashville Predators traded 30-year-old defenceman Subban to the New Jersey Devils for two players and two draft picks.
The Toronto Maple Leafs dealt veteran centre Marleau to the Carolina Hurricanes for a sixth-round pick in 2020. Carolina also gets a future first round pick and a future seventh round pick.
The Predators received defencemen Steven Santini and Jeremy Davies plus a second-round and a sixth round draft pick.
A former Norris Trophy winner as the league’s top defenceman and three-time All-Star, Subban scored nine goals and 22 assists in 63 games during his third season with Nashville in 2018-19.
In 645 career games, Subban has 310 assists and 408 points with the Montreal Canadiens and Predators.
He has three years remaining on an eight-year, $72 million contract he signed in 2014.
The move is expected to free up about $9 million in salary cap space for Nashville.
Marleau is part of the league’s elite 500 goal club, scoring 551 career goals in 1,657 NHL games. He finished with 16 goals and 37 points for Toronto last season.
A three-time all star and a former second-overall draft pick in 1997, Marleau signed as a free agent with Toronto in 2017.
