“Spikes of influenza A virus seen in wastewater samples from 59 sewer systems across 18 different states this spring may point to the spread of the H5N1 avian influenza virus that is currently infecting dairy cattle, a new study suggests,” according to a CNN report this week.
According to a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) alert in March:
A multi-state outbreak of HPAI A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cows was first reported on March 25, 2024. This is the first time that these bird flu viruses were found in cattle. CDC confirmed one human HPAI A(H5N1) infection that had exposure to dairy cattle in Texas that were presumed to be infected with the virus.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture posted an alert titled, “Confirmations of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Commercial and Backyard Flocks,” with the last reported detection occurring Friday, April 26.
A National Public Radio headline from May 2 said, “The U.S. may be missing human cases of bird flu, scientists say.”
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in late April H5N1 virus particles have also been found in grocery store milk. The FDA says the pasteurization process for milk renders the remnants of the virus inactive and assesses the commercial milk supply to be safe. But some experts caution against consumption of unpasteurized or raw milk and egg products.

Credible threat of a lab leak?
Gain-of-function research for H5N1 has been going on here in American labs, including at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. This work was suspended in 2014 due to safety concerns “at the highest levels of the U.S. government about the risk of an accident with an engineered virus,” according to a USA Today article. But work was allowed to resume in 2019, according to that same article, and “some of the halted experiments were quietly allowed to begin again under a revised federal oversight process, which was criticized for keeping secret the details of the new experiments and the basis for the government approvals.”
On December 9, 2019, a lab accident at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, exposed a lab trainee to the engineered H5N1 virus. In the end, the trainee did not get sick, but the lab was criticized for the way it handled the incident.
We must stay vigilant. Who knows what might come of current gain-of-function efforts?
We also need to be prepared.
While the first human case of H5N1 was confirmed recently in Texas, following exposure to cattle, his symptoms were mild (pinkeye).
If there are more human cases, who knows how the media might spin it, or how it might be politicized in time for a November surprise?
