A Quinnipiac University National Poll released Wednesday finds overall support for President Donald Trump’s immigration actions declining, except amongst Republicans.
Overall, 35 percent approve of Trump’s immigration moves, while 62 percent disapprove. But 78 percent of Republicans approve, and only 19 percent disapprove. Half of white voters without college degrees approve, while 47 percent disapprove. Among independent voters, 30 percent approve and 66 percent disapprove.
Younger voters are especially opposed to Trump’s immigration moves: 75 percent disapprove, while 21 percent approve.
Trump’s moves on immigration have been met with rising disapproval overall, Quinnipiac states:
Notably, the poll does not specify any aspects of immigration policy and simply asks: “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling – immigration issues?” Voters could be frustrated that the border wall is not under construction yet, or they could be upset that authorities have deported young illegal aliens smuggled into the U.S. as children who are now attending school.
Illegal border crossings have hit their lowest point in 17 years, according to a memo leaked to the Associated Press. The flow of “family units” of illegal aliens from Central America has also dramatically dropped by the tens of thousands.
Trump’s two travel bans on several terror-exporting countries have been blocked by regional district judges who labeled them a “Muslim ban.”
Trump’s approval rating stood at only 36 percent, according to the poll.
Pollsters questioned 1,078 voters from May 4 to May 9. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
