No More Americans Left in Wimbledon Singles Draw After John Isner Ousted

LONDON, United Kingdom – There are no more American players left in the singles draw at Wimbledon. Nineteenth seed Feliciano Lopez defeated ninth seed John Isner 6-7(10), 7-6(8), 7-6(7), 7-5. Yes, only one set did not go into the tiebreak, but only just.

These men are some of the hardest hitters in the game, and Isner is considered one of the best servers in recent memory. The men had a total of 86 aces; Isner with 52 and Lopez with 34. The entire match lasted almost three hours.

There was only one break in the entire match and it did not occur until the fourth set and eleventh game. Lopez broke Isner, which was also the first time Isner was broken at Wimbledon this year. Lopez had five other opportunities, but Isner was able to fight them off. He had two chances to break Lopez, but failed.

In the end it was Lopez’s ability to play the net that set him apart from Isner. He won 70% of his net points compared to Isner’s 43%. It was only fitting that Lopez won the match on an ace.

This was Isner’s first time in the third round. Lopez will face Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
