Full Video: Texas Oil Spill Press Conference
BAYTOWN, TEXAS--Officials from the federal government and Texas gathered to update the public on the Galveston oil spill that occurred on March 22. Breitbart Texas offers the entire video below.
Speaking on behalf the federal government is U.S. Coast Guard Captain Brian Penoyer, the on-scene coordinator for the response efforts. He was followed by several members of Texas state and local government officials including Lt. Governor David Dewhurst. Also speaking were Texas General Land Office Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Land Office Deputy Commissioner for Oil Spill Prevention and Response Greg Pollock, Galveston County Judge Mark Henry, Galveston Mayor Louis Rosen, and Galveston Parks Board Chairman Dr. Craig Brown.
All of the panel members expressed the feeling that a major disaster had been avoided by the good fortune of a north wind that pushed the majority of the oil spilled out of Galveston Bay and into the open Gulf of Mexico. Speakers commended the “responsible party”, Kirby Inland Marine, LP, for taking proactive steps to resolve environmental issues.
The Houston and Texas City ship channels were re-opened to limited commercial traffic while cleanup efforts continue until the effects of the spill are fully addressed.
Capt. Penoyer expressed they have no plans currently to use Core-Tex, an oil dispersal chemical agent, for their remediation efforts. He explained the primary remediation method employed at this time is containment and removal of the oil.
