William Bennett: 2nd Amendment ‘Primary Target’ of Potential Clinton Supreme Court

On August 23 author and Conservative Leaders for Education chairman William Bennett warned that the Second Amendment will be a “primary target” of the Supreme Court if Hillary Clinton is elected to the presidency.

He pointed out that Clinton will “appoint a dyed in the wool liberal to fill Antonin Scalia’s seat, thereby giving liberals a strong five-person majority on the Court.” And that court will then happily seize opportunities to reverse decisions that have bolstered the Second Amendment during the last two decades”–decisions like District of Columbia v Heller (2008) and McDonald v Chicago (2010).

Writing in Real Clear Politics, Bennett said, “Without a doubt, the Second Amendment would become a primary target of a liberal Supreme Court,” adding:

[Heller and McDonald] were each decided by just one vote. Given the opportunity, a liberal Court wouldn’t hesitate to overturn those decisions. We got a glimpse of this in June, when the notoriously liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Second Amendment does not permit the public to carry concealed firearms. A liberal Supreme Court would certainly uphold this ruling and continue to hack away at the rest of the Second Amendment.

Bennett suggests the threat a Clinton Supreme Court would pose to the Second Amendment–and numerous other aspects American life–is sufficient reason to vote for Donald Trump on November 8. He said those who say they will not support Trump because they are unsure what he will do in certain policy areas are missing the fact that Clinton has made very clear what she will do, and it is not good.

In other words, those who worry what Trump might do have the wrong view; they should be worried about what Hillary will do.

Addressing the Supreme Court specifically, Bennett said:

We don’t know exactly what a President Trump will do, but we do know that his list of eleven potential justices is very promising and a Vice President Mike Pence and a Republican Congress led by Speaker Paul Ryan will hold his feet to the fire for good appointments. On the other hand, we know exactly what Clinton will do.
