US VP Biden's son to leave hospital

US Vice President Joe Biden’s son will leave hospital Thursday after a “successful procedure” following a health scare last week, the White House said.

Beau Biden, who was reportedly evaluated at a cancer center in Houston, Texas, had an episode of “disorientation” and “weakness” while on vacation with his family.

The elder Biden cleared his schedule and flew to be with his son as he underwent tests.

“Yesterday our son Beau underwent a successful procedure,” said a statement Wednesday from the vice president and his wife Jill.

“He is in great shape and is going to be discharged tomorrow and (will head) home to Delaware. He will follow up with his local physicians in the coming weeks.”

No further details were available on the condition of the 44-year-old Delaware attorney general, who suffered a mild stroke three years ago.

It was not clear if his son’s health scare would thwart Biden’s plans to appear with President Barack Obama at a rally in his boyhood hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Friday.

Beau Biden was given a clean bill of health and had full motor and speech skills when he left hospital after his stroke in 2010.

In 1988, Joe Biden, then a US senator, twice had surgery to correct an aneurysm in an artery that supplies blood to the right side of the brain.

The Bidens have also been touched by tragedy.

Weeks after Joe Biden was elected to the Senate in 1972, his first wife Neilia and infant daughter Naomi were killed in a car crash, leaving him to bring up Beau and another son, Hunter.
