Former England international Emile Heskey scored the winner to fuel Newcastle Jets’ strong start to Australia’s A-League season on Saturday.
Heskey’s close-range flick put the Jets in front in the 36th minute and they held on against the strong-finishing Western Sydney Wanderers for a 2-1 away victory.
It was the one-time Liverpool forward’s fifth goal in six A-League outings.
Melbourne Victory stormed back from two goals down to crown a thrilling 3-2 win over Alessandro Del Piero’s Sydney FC on Saturday.
Eager to put last week’s 7-2 humiliation by Central Coast behind them, Sydney FC looked set for a much-needed win after taking a 2-0 lead in front of 21,531 home fans.
But two goals by teenage substitute Andrew Nabbout and another by Socceroo Archie Thompson in the last 12 minutes gave Ange Postecoglou’s side a memorable win.
Sydney’s goals came from Panamanian striker Yairo Yau and Dutch defender Pascal Bosschaart’s first-ever professional effort.
Del Piero, who sat out the loss to the Mariners with hamstring trouble, delivered a classy performance before coming off to rapturous applause in the 66th minute.
