A former Canadian diplomat is the latest murder victim in Cancun. The former consul resided in the beach resort city after retiring from his post.

After not hearing from him, friends of former Canadian Consul Daniel Lavoie went to his apartment and found a gory crime scene. The individuals called Mexican authorities, a short statement from the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office revealed.

SinEmbargo.mx reported the victim’s bloody body was found in his bedroom, wrapped in blankets. Authorities also found a message whose contents have not been revealed, the news outlet reported. After working as a consul for more than 10 years, Lavoie moved to Cancun and gave English and French classes on a part-time basis, the news outlet noted.

Cancun is seeing a dramatic rise in violence with almost 290 murders being reported in 2019 alone, reports El Diario de Yucatan. Earlier this year, a group of gunmen kidnapped 25 employees from a call center in a case linked to a cartel extortion scheme, Breitbart Texas reported at the time. Officials continue to downplay the violence to maintain the number of international tourists visiting each year.
