Los Angeles (AFP) – Former World Series winning pitcher John Wetteland was arrested Monday on a child sex abuse charge in Texas, jail records in Denton County near Dallas showed.

Wetteland, 52, was charged with “continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14” according to the jail records, which under Texas law means committing two or more acts of sexual abuse in a period of 30 or more days, regardless of whether the acts are committed against one or more victims.

The Dallas Morning News reported that The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services had referred the case to police in Bartonville, a town about 16 kilometers (10 miles) south of Denton, and the Denton County Sheriff’s Office carried out the arrest.

According to the arrest-warrant affidavit obtained by the newspaper, he is accused of having a four-year-old child perform a sex act on him in 2004.

The accuser, who is a relative of Wetteland, told police it happened two other times over a two-year period.

Wetteland was the Most Valuable Player of the 1996 World Series, when he registered four saves to help the New York Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves.

He retired as the Texas Rangers’ all-time saves leader with 150 after the 2000 season and later worked as a bullpen coach for the Washington Nationals and Seattle Mariners.
