Liverpool’s Salah breaks Premier League goals record

May 13 (UPI) — Mohamed Salah broke the single-season Premier League goals record in Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Brighton Sunday at Anfield in Liverpool, England.

The 25-year-old Egyptian striker sent the stands into a tizzy in the 26th minute. Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold dribbled toward the box before sending a pass to Dominic Solanke on the play. The forward then tapped a pass in for Salah.

Salah turned around and struck the ball with his left boot, beating Mathew Ryan badly to his left for his 32nd goal of this Premier League campaign.

Dejan Lovren added another first half score for the Reds when he beat Ryan in the 40th minute. The Reds defender jumped up for a header from an Andy Robertson cross and finished the ball strongly for a 2-0 lead.

Solanke got involved in the scoring column in the 53rd minute. Salah dribbled down the right side of the pitch on that play, before releasing a short feed to Solanke. The forward blasted a shot upper 90 at the near post for a three goal advantage.

Robertson added the Reds’ final goal in the 85th minute. That time, the defender hovered in the box during a Danny Ings cross. The feed was blocked by the Brighton defense, but rebounded out to Robertson, who buried a shot into the middle of the net.

Salah received the Golden Boot for his scoring effort this season, scoring 32 times in 38 games.

“This is very special,” Salah told Sky Sports after receiving the award.

“It’s always in my mind to help the team to win games, now we are in the Champions League next year and I have won the award, so I am very proud. I am trying to improve every year so I am very happy. It’s special to break the record here.”

Salah has 44 goals overall in his first season for Liverpool.

The Reds’ next test comes against Real Madrid in the Champions League final at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, May 26 at Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex in Kiev, Ukraine.
