Wisconsin Democrats to Punish Concealed Carry on Campus

In the wake of the heinous October 1 attack on unarmed students at Umpqua Community College, three of Wisconsin’s Democrat state representatives are pushing to make concealed carry on campus for self-defense a Class I felony.

The reps, Chris Taylor, Melissa Sargent, and Terese Berceau, are all from Madison and are now “seeking co-sponsors” for their legislation.

According to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel, the bill is titled the “College Campus Dangerous Weapon Ban.” Rep. Taylor, one of the bill’s sponsors, is “call[ing] for gun control measures like universal background checks and re-instituting Wisconsin’s 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases.”

Taylor did not address the fact that the Oregon gunman passed a background check for his guns–a fact that clearly demonstrates the impotency of that gun control approach. Moreover, she did not explain what a woman at the mercy of a sexual predator is supposed to do to protect herself during the 48 hours she would be waiting for a state’s permission to own a gun.

The College Campus Dangerous Weapon Ban was introduced in response to a Republican push to expand campus carry on public college and university campuses. Breitbart News previously reported that state Rep. Jesse Kremer (R-Kewaskum) and state Sen. Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostburg) want legal carry to include buildings on campus so students can protect themselves should a criminal with a gun enter classrooms, as Chris Harper Mercer entered classrooms at Umpqua Community College.

There is a sharp distinction between Democrats and Republicans on this issue. The three Democrat representatives want to make it illegal to carry guns on campus for self-defense while the Republicans want to make it illegal for public colleges and universities to infringe on Second Amendment rights.
