“Those who committed these acts have nothing to do with the Muslim religion,” French president Francois Hollande declared on Friday, referring to the massacre of a dozen people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine followed by an intense manhunt that ended with two simultaneous hostage crises during which four more were killed.
On Monday, The New York Times Editorial Board seemingly demonstrated how furious it was with the Egyptian government’s stance on gay rights. Egypt had just acquitted twenty-six allegedly homosexual men on “debauchery” charges, and the Editorial Board worries they are now “likely to suffer a lifetime of public scorn.”
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi delivered a speech on New Year’s Day 2015, in anticipation for the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, which ended Saturday evening. In his address, al-Sisi highlighted the necessity for reformation within the ummah, or Islamic nation.
