Rumors of the Tea Party's demise are greatly exaggerated. In Ohio, the Tea Party Victory Fund has put out a video that has gone viral on the Internet.
The video shows a woman saying that Americans must reelect Barack Obama because he gave her a cell phone paid for by you, the taxpayers – part of a massive new entitlement program created by the Obama administration.
The Tea Party Victory Fund's chairman, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, explains to the viewers how this showcases President Obama fostering government dependence, trying to impress upon voters that the role of government is to give you things paid for by other people.
Blackwell has been working on this larger issue since long before Barack Obama was on the national stage. In 2006 he published a book Rebuilding America, in which he speaks about a clash of worldviews between a nation based on the individual and family, where people are free to make their own choices and government only does for people what they cannot do for themselves, and a competing vision of a government that provides for all of our daily needs.
So this theme is once again front-and-center in the national debate, and may determine which way Ohio goes in the presidential race. As in 2004, Ohio may well be the deciding state in the battle for the White House.
