Last week Sensei extended his call streak to four straight weeks. This week, “Wrath Of The Titans” looks to extend Greek Mythology’s win streak at the box office while “The Hunger Games” seeks higher bounties. “Mirror Mirror” will get stuck in between the epic showdown.
This weekend’s predictions and revenue results go as follows.
1. The Hunger Games ($55 Million) – The franchise is still fresh and engaging. Because of this, the film will have a better hold than the more recent “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” films, which usually drop around 70 percent on the second weekend.
2. Wrath Of The Titans ($41 Million) – The first one opened in a much different time. In fact, the original “Clash Of The Titans” hit theaters in 2010 directly after “Avatar” to be one of the first films to take advantage of the 3-D phenomenon. That boosted its grosses considerably ($61 million opening weekend). The sequel faces a marketplace with less 3-D interest. This will lead to a healthy, but much lower opening than the first “Titans.”
3. Mirror Mirror ($21 Million) – The first of the new Snow White projects opens (with the other, “Snow White and the Huntsman” scheduled for June 1st). Don’t expect the Julia Roberts box office fireworks of old with the film’s confusing marketing. That, and their key demographic (young teen girls) will still be enthralled with “Hunger Games” not really yielding much interest. Look for, at best, “Eat Pray Love”-like results here.
4. 21 Jump Street ($10 Million) – Film will continue to get what it can off comedy seeking audiences. The next two weeks will be crucial in deciding if the film can break the $100 million domestic mark.
5. The Lorax ($8 Million) – Film will drop further behind a “Despicable Me”-like box office pace, and the expensive marketing and production costs are beginning to loom large. Despite the high opening, film doesn’t have the profitability as some of its box office peers.
In other calls: Look for “October Baby” to again break the top 10 with another solid 1.6 million.
