Feinstein to DHS: Stop Deporting Non-Citizen Workers, Despite Growing CA Unemployment
Senator Diane Feinstein (D–CA) is asking DHS to stop enforcing immigration law when it comes to California's farm workers:
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has wisely used its prosecutorial discretion to defer removal of young people who arrived in the United States without documentation as children.… I respectfully suggest that you adopt a similar policy of exercising prosecutorial discretion to defer enforcement against agricultural employers and workers.
The move seems especially curious given a recent rise in California's unemployment rate, as well as an admission that more and more workers are leaving the workforce out of discouragement.
The unemployment rate edges up to 8.7% in July from 8.5%, and payrolls grow by 38,100. But a large number of people also drop out of the labor force.
Legal California residents may not take too kindly to one of their Senators advocating so actively for non-citizens during a perioid of high and growing unemployment. On the Republican side of the Senate aisle, Senator Marco Rubio has been taking a pounding in the polls for his pro-amnesty positioning.
In April, Rubio enjoyed a +51 favorable rating. Today, the number is down to +33, a significant drop for a popular Republican among base voters. The Senate Gang of 8 amnesty bill was released after the April poll.
