A new poll released Monday revealed that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has become increasingly unpopular among Republicans as a result of his vote against Obamacare repeal in the Senate.
Sen. John McCain, along with Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), voted against Obamacare repeal in the Senate, stalling Obamacare repeal efforts in the upper chamber. McCain and Murkowski voted for an Obamacare repeal bill in 2015 that would have become law if there were a Republican in the White House.
A previous poll revealed that Collins has become increasingly unpopular among Maine Republican primary voters after she voted to keep Obamacare.
A new Gallup poll estimated that 51 percent of Republicans approve of the Arizona senator, a ten percent dip from August 2015 when 61 percent of Republicans approved of John McCain. Seventy-one percent of Democrats support Sen. McCain, a 22 percent gain from 2015. Overall, 58 percent of American adults approve of McCain.
Senator McCain’s popularity has dropped to a record low. McCain’s popularity among Republicans spiked to 93 percent in 2008, when McCain ran for president against Barack Obama, and has withered ever since. Conversely, McCain’s favorability has only grown since the 2008 presidential election when Democrats’ approval of McCain spiked 22 points after he voted to keep Obamacare.
Sen. McCain publicly pledged to repeal and replace Obamacare on the campaign trail and in the halls of the Senate. John McCain once said, “It is clear that any serious attempt to improve our health care system must begin with a full repeal and replacement of Obamacare, and I will continue fighting on behalf of the people of Arizona to achieve it.”
After McCain voted to keep Obamacare, he claimed that Arizona would “get screwed” if Republicans managed to pass the Obamacare repeal package.
McCain’s popularity among Democrats became evident right before he cast his vote to keep Obamacare. McCain laughed with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) hugged McCain.
