Police: Water Department Evacuated After Man 'Pays' Bill with Crack Cocaine

DELTONA, Florida – Police say the Deltona Water department was evacuated yesterday morning after a man entered the office where customers normally pay their water bills and handed the clerk an envelope containing a white powder.

Volusia County sheriff’s spokesperson Gary Davidson said officials evacuated employees in case the powder turned out to be toxic.  The Sheriff’s Office, HAZMAT teams and the Deltona fire department responded only to discover that the powder was crack cocaine.

According to another Sheriff’s spokesperson, Brandon Haught, “The clerk (at the counter) said she had never seen the man before. He didn’t say anything to her, he just handed her the envelope and walked out.” Police are hoping surveillance cameras will aid in the investigation.
