The Islamic State (ISIS) executed two doctors in Mosul this past weekend in the ongoing purge of physicians who refuse to treat ISIS fighters.

According to Rudaw, Dr. Firas al-Hamdani said, “Elements of the organization (ISIS) executed physicians Tareq Jassim and Adil Ayham.” Both physicians, executed via a firing squad, were “working in the Department of Surgery of the Republican General Hospital in Mosul.”

ISIS rounded up doctors and nurses after capturing Mosul in June and have made clear its willingness “to punish doctors and nurses who refuse to treat its wounded fighters.”

News of these strong-arm tactics against physicians comes just days after The Washington Post reported that ISIS’s “vaunted exercise in state-building appears to be crumbling.”

According to the WaPo, “Services are collapsing, prices are soaring, and medicines are scarce in towns and cities across the ‘caliphate’ proclaimed in Iraq and Syria by ISIS.” The outlet stated that the projection of the State running smoothly is only perceptible because of “slick Islamic State videos” posted for propaganda purposes.
