CLEVELAND, Jan. 5 (UPI) — Could the Cleveland Cavaliers add another All-Star to its lineup?
According to Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon, the organization has its eye on one.
Rajon Rondo has been riding the bench for the Chicago Bulls. The four-time All-Star inked a two-year, $27 million deal this offseason when he moved from the Sacramento Kings.
Vardon wrote Thursday that the Cavaliers “are watching this development.”
The Cavaliers also have LeBron James’ former teammate Mario Chalmers on its radar. The team let Matthew Dellavedova leave in free agency this offseason, while veteran Mo Williams decided not to return.
DeAndre Liggins, Kay Felder, and Jordan McCrae are currently earning the most minutes backing up Kyrie Irving.
“That was obvious from day one, first day of training camp,” James told Vardon. “We don’t have a reliable, veteran backup point guard.”
Chalmers is a free agent. He suffered a torn Achilles last season and hasn’t worked out for any teams.
Rondo met with Bulls executives Gar Forman and John Paxson on New Year’s Eve to talk about his role.
“It went OK,” Rondo told ESPN.com’s Nick Friedell. “It really wasn’t a clear-cut message [from Forman and Paxson]. We’ll talk again.”
After the Bulls lost to the Milwaukee Bucks that night, Rondo told reporters that he would “absolutely” ask to be moved to another team if his benching continued.
The 30-year-old is averaging 7.2 points, 7.1 assists, and a career-high 6.5 rebounds this season for Chicago.
