Preacher murder suspects bailed: police

Police on Sunday said they had released on bail two men arrested on suspicion of the murder of grandfather Alan Greaves in Sheffield on Christmas Eve.

South Yorkshire police revealed they had released a man in his 20s and another in his 40s after they had been detained over the murder of lay preacher and church organist Greaves.

Greaves’s widow Maureen earlier told the congregation of St Saviour’s Church in High Green, Sheffield, that she had cried over the “evil that has been done”.

“I won’t be able to contact you over the next few days, but I want to thank you for the support you have given me,” she said.

“I have prayed constantly for Alan and I know you have too. I have not stopped crying for him and I know you have not stopped either.”

Greaves died from head injuries after being attacked close to his home as he made his way to church.
