US firm reports big oil find in Gulf of Mexico

US firm Anadarko Petroleum has announced what it calls a “potentially giant” oil find in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

It said a second well, called Shenandoah-2, dug off the coast of Louisiana confirms results from a first dig and indicate “excellent quality reservoir and fluid properties.”

“The successful Shenandoah-2 well marks one of Anadarko’s largest oil discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico,” Anadarko senior vice president Bob Daniel said in a statement issued Tuesday night.

It did not say how much oil Anadarko may have found.

The new well was dug to a depth of 31,405 feet (10,450 meters) in about 5,800 feet (1,930 meters) of water.

Anadarko has a 30 percent interest in the two Shenandoah wells. Its partners are ConocoPhillips (30 percent), Cobalt International Energy (20 percent), Venari Resources (10 percent) and Marathon Oil (10 percent).
