Los Angeles police launched a huge manhunt Tuesday for a black-clad gunman who ambushed two officers, shooting and slightly injuring them, a spokesman said.
In a case recalling that of alleged cop killer Christopher Dorner in February, the suspect opened fire on two officers outside the LA Police Department (LAPD)’s Wilshire police station, said LAPD spokesman Andrew Smith.
A 25-block section of the city was closed down, as officers swarmed into the area to look for the suspect, described as in his early 30s, African American, dressed all in black, with a hat and a handgun.
“The officers were returning to the station when somebody opened fire on them right outside the police station,” said Smith, adding that the officers returned fire. It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was hit.
The victims suffered “minor” injuries, one to a hand and the other to the head, and were treated at the nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and then released. “Our officers are going to be OK,” Smith said.
Ex-LAPD cop Dorner killed four people, including two officers, and injured several others during a February manhunt which ended with him surrounded by police in a burning mountain cabin, where he apparently killed himself.
