DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 18 (UPI) — Ford on Thursday announced an expanded recall of faulty airbags to all 50 states after a request by federal regulators.
The Dearborn-based automaker expanded its original recall by 447,310 vehicles to 502,489 total vehicles. The first wave of recalls included only vehicles in high-humidity areas like the Gulf Coast and Hawaii.
The problem was with airbags manufactured by Japanese supplier Takata Corp. The airbags can rupture into fragments and injure passengers.
Officials with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last month called on automakers to expand the recall to all states after an airbag incident was reported in North Carolina, a state not within the recall area.
“As of Dec. 18, 2014, Ford is aware of approximately 462,911 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, approximately 27,516 in Canada and approximately 7,578 in Mexico affected by this recall. Approximately 4,484 additional vehicles outside of North America are also included in this action,” a news release from Ford said.
The recall includes 2005-08 Mustang vehicles built between Aug. 18, 2004 and June 25, 2007 at Flat Rock Assembly Plant and 2005-06 Ford GT vehicles built between Feb. 11, 2005 and Jan. 30, 2006.
Ford said it is away of one accident with injury related to the Takata airbag problem.
