BEVERLY HILLS , Calif., May 27 (UPI) — Brooklyn native Jimmy Smits is to star in the upcoming drama series The Get Down, Netflix announced.
Created by Baz Luhrmann, the show is about the birth of hip-hop in 1970s New York.
The 13-episode program is to premiere via the streaming service in 2016.
Smits, 59, is best known for his work on the TV shows LA Law, NYPD Blue, The West Wing and Sons of Anarchy.
