LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) — Ghostbusters costars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig performed what one cast member called a “folk lady version” of the popular franchise’s theme song, during a spot on The Graham Norton Show.
The new cover was McCarthy’s idea, a way to “really enrage men” complaining that their favorite old movie was being hijacked by four female leads, film director Paul Feig said, according to People Magazine. Feig, along with costars Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, encouraged McCarthy and Wigg to perform the song.
“Fellas all across the world in their mothers’ basements rose up,” McCarthy joked during a recent episode of the show. “We tried to explain that the other films will still exist and that it’s not an either-or situation.”
Feig got the party started, popping in to the show on video. “I have a story I want to tell, since we are in the business of ruining men’s childhoods.” Feig said jokingly. He then asked the women to perform the cover.
The duo delivered a particularly horrible version of the iconic Ghostbusters theme song just for those complainers, Deadline reported.
Feig got payback after the performance, when he got slimed — old-school Ghostbuster style.
The film, which isn’t even out yet, has gotten a strong backlash from angry fans, incensed that the major roles in the Ghostbusters reboot are being played by women.
