MLB All-Star Josh Johnson retiring after Tommy John hat-trick

Jan. 19 (UPI) — Josh Johnson hasn’t toed a mound in major league baseball since 2013.

That’s likely part of the reason he is deciding to hang up his cleats. The 32-year-old right-handed pitcher is retiring from baseball, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.

Johnson led the league with a 2.30 ERA in 2010. He was named an All-Star in 2009 and 2010 as a member of the Florida Marlins. He spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Marlins, before being traded in 2013 to the Toronto Blue Jays. That deal included Emilio Bonifacio, John Buck, Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, and cash in exchange for Henderson Alvarez, Anthony DeSclafani, Yunel Escobar, Adeiny Hechavarria, Jake Marisnick, Jeff Mathis, and Justin Nicolino.

He spent 2015 with single-A Lake Elsinore, in the San Diego Padres’ system, before getting his third Tommy John surgery. He signed to a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants in November.

Johnson parts with a 3.40 ERA, a 58-45 record, and 915 strikeouts in 998 career innings pitched.
