Prices Down for 13 Groups of Building Materials in September 2013 Y-o-Y, Reports SCAD


WAM Abu Dhabi, 19 Oct. 2013 (WAM) – Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi (SCAD) issued today its monthly report on the prices of building materials for the month of September and the third quarter of 2013.




The report presents an analysis of the movements in the prices of the various materials used in the construction industry in Abu Dhabi retail market, year over year and month over month comparisons of prices in Q3 and September 2013. The dissemination of this important report, which presents a wide range of price data, is intended to serve the needs of data users in the public and private sectors for the purposes of research, planning and decision making in ways that support the construction sector as well as related and dependent sectors.




Building materials prices: September/August 2013 Slight changes were observed in the average prices of building materials groups in September compared with August 2013, with increases ranging from 2.7 percent for the "Wood" group to 2.8 percent for the construction labour. Price falls for the same months compared were in the range of 0.2 percent for small building wires to 0.5 for waterproofing products.




Steel The average prices of "Steel" decreased by 0.4 percent in September compared with August 2013, reflecting drops in the prices of some items within this group.




Power cables The average prices of "Power cables" declined 0.3 percent MoM in September 2013, as a result of increases in all of the items falling under this group.




Construction labour costs The average cost of "Construction labour" increased by 2.8 percent in September 2013 compared with August 2013, due to rises in the wages of "Blacksmith" and "Carpenter" resulted in an increase of wages of carpenters and metal fixers by 10.0 percent each.




Wood The report reveals a 2.7 percent y-o-y increase of in the average prices of the "Wood" group during September 2013.




September 2013/2012- Prices falls: SCAD reported decreases in the average monthly prices of 13 groups of building materials during September 2013 compared with September 2012. The falls ranged between 0.5 percent for paints and 11.8 percent for cement blocks.




Cement Blocks The average prices of cement blocks decreased by 11.8 percent in September 2013 compared with September 2012, as all of the items constituting the groups underwent decrease of 3.8 – 17.3 percent.




Wires The average prices of "Wires" decreased in September 2013 compared with September 2012. "Wires for residential towers" accounted for the largest fall (9.5percent), while "Wires for small building" and "Wires for apartments" decreased by 7.7pecent and 3.2 percent respectively.




Transportation equipment/machinery rents The "Transportation equipment" group declined 3.5 percent in September 2013 compared with September 2012, showing decreases that ranged between 1.1 percent in May 2013 and 4.0 percent in January 2013.




September 2013/2012 – Prices rises: Glass The average prices of the "Glass" group increased by 11.7 percent in September 2013 compared with September 2012.




Aggregates and sand The average prices of "Aggregates and sand" increased by 13.1 percent, in September 2013 compared with September 2012, as all of the items in the group recorded increases ranging between 6.7 percent and 40.0 percent.




Construction labour costs The average cost of "Construction labour" increased by 8.9 percent in September 2013 compared with September 2012, reflecting increases in the wages of most of the trades making up the group in the range of 5.9 percent and 22.7 percent.




Building materials prices: Q3/Q2 2013 As SCAD’s report indicates, varying changes were recorded in the average prices of most groups of building materials during Q3 2012 compared with Q2 2012.




Increases ranged between 0.1 percent for the "Glass" group and 8.3 percent for "Aggregates and sand".




The average prices of "Roofing materials", "Tiles and marble" and "Diesel" remained stable over Q3 2013 compared with Q2 2013.




On the other hand the average price declined for a number building materials groups during Q3 2013 compared with Q2 2013. These include "Construction labour costs" (down 4.9 percent), "Wires for apartments" (down 4.8 percent), "Bathroom set with accessories" (down 4.5 percent) and "Single stainless steel sink with mixer" (down 4.1 percent).




Building materials prices: Q3 2013/2012 Changes were recorded in the average prices of most of the building materials groups during Q3 2013 compared with Q3 2012, dominated by a downward trend.




Price falls ranged between 0.4 percent for "Paints" and 11.1 percent for "Wires for small building". In addition, "Cement blocks" decreased by 10.2 percent, "(PVC) Pipes" by 8.4 percent and "Wires for apartments" by 7.5 percent.




Increases ranged between 0.8 per cent for "Concrete" and 18.0 percent for "Natural stone", while "Glass" decreased by 16.5 percent and "Aggregates and sand" by 11.1 percent.




The average price for the "Diesel" group remained unchanged during Q3 2013, compared with Q3 2012.
