Crews seek cause of flying manhole covers

ATLANTA, Feb. 19 (UPI) —

Utility crews were searching beneath the streets of Atlanta Tuesday for the cause of an explosion that sent manhole covers flying into the air, officials said.

No one was hurt when several manhole covers along Peachtree Street rocketed 6 feet into the air Monday night, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The problem was believed to be electrical in nature and related to repairs being performed underground, Atlanta fire department Capt. Marian McDaniel said.

Electricity was shut off to 10 nearby buildings, McDaniel said.

Workers from Georgia Power and Atlanta Gas Light were on scene to identify the cause, McDaniel said.
