U.S. military jet crashes in Deerfield, Va.

DEERFIELD, Va., Aug. 27 (UPI) —

A U.S. military jet crashed in rural Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the crash occurred on a mountain in Deerfield, possibly in the vicinity of Deerfield Valley Road.

NBC News reports that the aircraft was a Massachusetts Air National Guard F-15C fighter.

A woman who lives two miles from the crash site said she "heard a big boom and a roar afterward" at approximately 9 a.m. EDT.

A local farmer wrote on Twitter that he heard "two big booms" when the jet crash landed, and posted a photo of a plume of smoke reportedly from the crash site. He described it as "a mushroom type cloud, it looked like it was out of a move."

Emergency responders were en route to the accident scene.
