A military offensive in north-west Pakistan has driven at least 250,000 from their homes. Pakistani forces launched an offensive earlier this month against Islamist militant strongholds in the tribal region bordering Afghanistan – an area Washington and Islamabad regards as a safe haven for Taleban and Al Qaeda fighters. Fighting is reported to be intense with both sides using massive firepower. The United Nations says at least a quarter of a million people have been driven from their homes.
