California: Immigration Shifting from Latino to Asian

Census figures show Asian immigrants are replacing Hispanic immigrants in California.

According to the numbers, the number of Asian immigrants coming to California “is now two times greater than the flow from Latin America.”

In 2001, 42% of the state’s immigrants were Latino. A decade later, 57% of immigrants “were from Asia and (22%) were from Latin America.”

Public Policy Institute co-director Hans Johnson said “since 2006, the number of Latin American immigrants arriving each year in California has dropped by about 70,000” while “the number of Asian immigrants coming to California has grown, particularly from China and Taiwan.”

“This is a pretty astounding change over a short period of time,” Johnson said.
