‘Pizza Rat’ Enchants Social Media

Social media came alive Monday afternoon with the discovery of a 14 second video of a rat dragging a slice of pizza down a flight of stairs in New York.

The video was uploaded by comedian Matt Little who joked in the description, “Master Splinter bringing food home to feed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?” Others likened Pizza Rat to Chuck E. Cheese, the mascot of the pizza and games for kids chain restaurant.

Perhaps it was the harried way in which Pizza Rat carried his greasy burden down the metal stairs (only to have it flip on his head at one point). Maybe it was the fact that he didn’t quite make it to the bottom with his reward, making him a fallible hero, or perhaps a Sisyphus for our age. Whatever the reason, no one seems to find Pizza Rat even a little bit disgusting. On the contrary, people expressed their sense of identification with him (or is it her?) Here’s a sample of early Pizza Rat fandom:

Anything can happen on Twitter, especially if it’s a slow news day.
