Police in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, responded to reports of a shooting Monday and discovered a son had shot and killed his father in self-defense.

The incident occurred after the father first shot at the 40-year-old son.

According to WIAT, deputies arrived on scene “to find an 82-year-old man who was shot to death and a 40-year-old man with a minor gunshot wound to the face.”

The 82-year-old deceased man was identified as Archie McDaniel. Officials believe he was arguing with his two sons.

AL.com reports the son who was shot had come to the house early Monday morning in hopes of retrieving possessions his father had thrown into the yard. The son chose Monday morning because he did not think his father would be home. But McDaniel was home and waiting outside when the son arrived.

Hearing the sound of his father shooting at the 40-year-old son, another son came out of the house to try to “de-escalate” things. He soon found himself staring down the barrel of his father’s gun. The wounded son then intervened by killing McDaniel.

Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Department Capt. K.T. Hart said no charges are expected as “Everything appears to be justified.” He said the son “had to shoot…to protect himself and the others that were there.”

Officials believe a medical issue may have contributed to the father’s actions.
