Tea Party Actress: Threats to Burn Down Theater Forced Her to Leave Play

Actress Maria Conchita Alonso flexed her First Amendment rights by backing the gubernatorial candidacy of Tea Party favorite Tim Donnelly.

The result? Alonso had to leave a Calif.-based production of The Vagina Monologues because people who disagreed with Donnelly’s opposition to illegal immigration vowed to torch the theater hosting the show.

They were saying they were going to burn down the theater, they were going to boycott [the show,]” Alonso told Fox News.

The actress said she dropped out of the production so the controversy didn’t eclipse the show.

“This is a thing for me,” she said, noting her cast-mates “don’t have to go through that.

Donnelly is a staunch advocate against illegal immigration and supports a smaller, more streamlined government.

The show’s producer, Eliana Lopez, told KPIX 5 that Alonso’s removal from the show made sense, saying, “doing what she is doing is against what we believe.”
