Earlier this week on “Charlie Rose,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said, “President Obama’s core belief is you will not deal with the ISIS problem sustainably until the Assad problem has been resolved.”
To this end, the Obama administration feels once we have a nuclear deal with Iran, they will then turn on their ally, Syria, and somehow convince Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to leave.
While discussing how to get Assad to leave, Power said, “I think you’re going to see a push on diplomacy in the coming weeks, and it is our hope that perhaps also, if the nuclear deal can go forward and we get the terms that we need in that space, that you’ll start to see a shift in Iran’s posture.”
Iran has been a strong supporter of Syria because of their mutual enemy in former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein led the alliance to form during the Iran–Iraq War. However, Powers believes “those who have influence over Assad, namely Russia … and Iran need to look at the very bleak picture of what is Syria and the foreign terrorist fighter flow — all of the things that again threaten not just Syrians, but the broader international community, and make the case that it is in the interest of the Syrian people, the region and the broader security picture for Assad to go.”
