Don't Look Now: There's Another Population-Control Freak on the Loose

In the wake of yesterday’s hostage drama at the Discovery Network, we have learned that the perpetrator, James Lee, was driven by environmental extremism. It turns out that he didn’t like people very much, seeing them as threats to the environment, as the Washington Post put it, “especially ‘parasitic’ babies.”

Lee was shot and killed by police when he drew his gun and pointed it at one of his captives – possibly preparing to do his part for population control during his attack on a media outlet he had evidently long thought was too pro-human. His beef with Discovery evidently was rooted in its refusal to heed demands like the following posted on a website that, according to CBS, is called savetheplanetprotest.com:

Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation.

Sounds pretty crazy, right?

Well, is it really any crazier than the views of White House Science Advisor John Holdren, who has co-authored a book entitled Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment? In it, he calls for, among other things, “a Planetary Regime” to keep down the world’s population. This regime would entail “compulsory population-control laws, even including laws requiring compulsory abortion.”

Other ideas favored by Barack Obama’s “Science Czar” include, “involuntary fertility control,” “a program of sterilizing women after their second or third child,” and “adding a sterilant to drinking water or staple foods.”

Another way to reduce the planet’s population would be to render America unable to protect its people against a ballistic missile-delivered weapon of mass destruction. Not surprisingly, Holdren has also been adamantly opposed to U.S. missile defenses for many years. That he seeks to translate his animus into policy is clear from his hiring of one of his fellow Luddites, a prominent critic named Philip Coyle, as the director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Coyle received a recess appointment earlier this year after Senate Republicans held up his nomination. They quite properly did so on the grounds that he would use the OSTP job (which reports directly to Holdren) to further Team Obama’s agenda of scuppering American anti-missile systems.

The administration’s own efforts towards this end have, of course, now been abetted by concessions made to the Russians — who fully share that Obama-Holdren-Coyle agenda — in the New START Treaty.

The question occurs: With so like-minded an anti-human in the White House, why would James Lee feel the need to cavil about – let alone take hostages at – Discovery? And shouldn’t the rest of us be at least as worried about what John Holdren is doing at his office as we were over James Lee’s fatal visit to Discovery’s?
